Ulrich Mattheswas born in Berlin. His first engagements took him to the Vereinigte Bühnen Krefeld/Mönchengladbach, the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus and the Bayerische Staatsschauspiel. In 1988 he moved to the Münchner Kammerspiele, from 1992 to the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz. Ulrich Matthes has been a member of the Deutsches Theater ensemble since 2004. He has received numerous awards, including the Gertrud-Eysoldt-Ring for outstanding acting achievements in 2004 and the Berlin Theatre Prize of the Stiftung Preußische Seehandlung at the Berlin Theatertreffen in 2007.

In 2005 and 2008 he was voted Actor of the Year in the magazine “Theater heute”, in 2008 he received the FAUST Theatre Prize for the role of Vanya in Jürgen Gosch’s production of Uncle Vanya. In 1998 he was awarded the Bavarian Film Prize for his acting performance in the film Feuerreiter and in 2015 he was awarded the Grimme Prize for his role in the crime scene Im Schmerz geboren (Born in Pain) and the Golden Camera for Best Actor nationally. In 2015 he was also awarded the German Television Academy Prize for his performance in Bornholmer Straße. Ulrich Matthes is a member of the Akademie der Künste Berlin and the German and European Film Academies.
